How to Fix a Laptop That Won’t Turn On

Before assuming the worst, a dead-looking laptop is often solvable with a few basic checks that take less than five minutes.

Rule Out Power Issues

Try a different outlet and charging cable, and check for any light on the charging port indicating it is receiving power. A drained battery combined with a faulty cable is one of the most common causes of a laptop that appears completely dead.

Try a Hard Reset

Unplug the charger, remove the battery if removable, hold the power button for thirty seconds, then reconnect everything and try again. This clears residual electrical charge that can cause a laptop to become unresponsive without any actual hardware fault.

If none of this works, a blank or flickering screen with fans running usually points to a display or graphics issue rather than a dead unit.
