How to Back Up Your Phone Before an Update

Major software updates occasionally go wrong, which is why backing up first takes the risk out of tapping install.

Use Built-In Cloud Backup

iPhones can back up via iCloud under Settings, your name, iCloud Backup, while Android phones back up through Settings, Google, Backup. Both take just a few minutes over Wi-Fi and cover contacts, photos, app data, and settings.

Do a Manual Check Too

Confirm your most important photos and documents are actually synced by opening the cloud app and spot-checking recent items. It is also worth writing down or backing up any passwords stored only on the device itself.

This five-minute habit is the single best insurance policy against a failed update wiping out data.
