Are Extended Warranties on Electronics Worth It

Extended warranties are pitched at nearly every electronics checkout, but whether they make financial sense depends heavily on the specific device.

When They Tend to Pay Off

Devices with moving parts, batteries prone to degrading, or a history of manufacturer defects, like laptops and gaming consoles, see the most genuine value from extended coverage, especially accidental damage protection.

When to Skip It

Many credit cards already extend the manufacturer warranty automatically for purchases made with that card, which can make a paid extension redundant. For lower-cost accessories, the warranty cost relative to simply replacing the item outright often is not worth it.

Checking your credit card’s existing purchase protection before buying an extended warranty often reveals you already have coverage.
