Two-Factor Authentication Explained in Plain English

Two-factor authentication sounds technical, but the concept is simple: it requires something you know plus something you have before letting anyone into an account.

How It Actually Works

After entering your password, a second step, usually a code sent by text, generated by an app, or a physical security key, confirms it is really you. Even if someone steals your password, they still cannot get in without that second piece.

Which Method to Choose

Authenticator apps are more secure than text message codes, which can be intercepted through a technique called SIM swapping. Physical security keys offer the strongest protection but are usually only necessary for high-risk accounts like primary email or financial services.

Turning this on for email, banking, and social accounts is one of the single most effective security steps available to anyone.
