How to Fix a Frozen Smartphone Without Losing Data

A frozen phone screen is alarming, but a force restart almost always resolves it without touching any stored data.

Force Restart First

On most iPhones, quickly press volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On Android, holding the power button for ten to fifteen seconds typically triggers the same kind of forced reboot.

If It Freezes Again Soon After

Check which app was open when it froze, since a single misbehaving app is the most common cause. Updating that app, or the phone’s operating system, usually resolves recurring freezes within a day or two.

A factory reset should be treated as a last resort, only after backups are confirmed and simpler fixes have been ruled out.
