How to Fix a Wi-Fi Router That Keeps Disconnecting

A router that drops connection every few hours is usually not broken, it is overloaded, overheated, or fighting interference from neighboring networks.

Check the Basics First

Restart the router, make sure it has ventilation on all sides, and move it away from microwaves, cordless phones, and thick walls. Firmware updates, found in the router’s admin panel, often fix stability bugs the manufacturer already identified.

Reduce Network Congestion

If you live in an apartment building, switch to the 5GHz band or a less crowded Wi-Fi channel using a free network analyzer app. Too many connected devices on an older router can also cause drops, so consider disconnecting unused smart devices.

If disconnects continue after these steps, the router itself may simply be past its useful life, especially if it is more than five years old.
